last summer, i spent some months living in hyde park, chicago.

despite the long hours i spent researching, and writing, and reading in the regenstein library, i was grateful to have time to experience and explore the lively city.

it was both a memorable and hot summer; full of books and lively discussion, long walks, many laughs with friends, and wonderful food. here’s hoping that the future holds many more summers like that.

skyscrapers downtown

eat-

  • have brunch at valois, and be sure to get the pancakes (genuinely one of the best diners i have ever been to)
  • eat a slice of deep dish pizza from giordano’s
  • get a cold ginger beer from uncle joe’s jerk chicken restaurant (get the largest possible size, you will not regret it)
  • coconut ice cream from kilwin’s
  • go to chinatown for incredible dumplings (order fried pork dumplings and pork buns, of course)
  • drink a stiegl grapefruit radler from miller’s pub
  • get a buttermilk old fashioned doughnut from firecakes
  • order chengdu dumplings from lao sze chuan (very spicy, but so delicious)
  • snacks from pret a manger (get a bowl of coconut power oatmeal with honey and granola, a couple cayenne or ginger shots, a warm falafel and hummus wrap, a refreshing bottle of green good stuff, and a rich dark chocolate bar with sea salt, for good measure)
chicago at sunset

go to-

  • visit the museum of contemporary art
  • explore millennium park
  • take a walk around the navy pier
  • get a photo of the bean, but go at night (there are less people, and you can experience the energy of the city after dark)
  • visit the art institute of chicago (and spend a good while in the photography and african art exhibitions)
  • stroll along the riverwalk in the afternoon, and at night
  • spend a sunny afternoon at promontory point (take in the view for a while before going for a dip in the water)
  • explore the national museum of mexican art to see some incredibly powerful and beautiful exhibitions
  • window shop along the magnificent mile
  • take a boat tour at sunset for stunning views of the city and lake michigan
